Most everyone understands most of the truths about tape but few understand some of the real issues associated with our new found dependence on RAID protected and even de-duplication intelligent disk.
Tape statistics from Gartner and others affirm that 1 in 10 recovery images on tape are unrecoverable, that every TB of data protected results in 25 TB being written to tape and 50 TB if redundant, that 10 degrees of temperature change can change the life of a tape by 10 years or more. Also, these studies reveal that 34% of companies never test restoring from tape and of those who did, 77% experienced tape failures.
However, did you know that the University of Wisconsin was involved in a study of 1.5 million disk drives where they found more than 400,000 instances of checksum mismatches? That only 8% of them could be detected by a RAID controller? Studies also discovered that 3088 of the 358,000 SATA drives tested had non-traditionally detectable and therefore unrecoverable errors. The reality is that disk-based dumb and de-dupe intelligent appliances that are currently being used to assist in meeting the backup window dilemma most face are predisposed to silent, undetectable and therefore uncorrectable data corruption issues. The result is the potential for data loss.
The explosive growth and our requirement to keep data around for longer periods of time requires an end to the concept of a traditional backup for the 60-80% of data that is rarely if ever changed, the type that is compounding at 10x the rate of its structured counterpart.
